OTTAWA, February 6, 2020 – Newly appointed Senator Judith Keating (New Brunswick) announced today that she will be joining the Independent Senators Group (ISG).
“It is with great humility that I have accepted my role as the new Senator for New Brunswick. There is in my view no greater privilege than to serve both my Province and my Country and I look forward to serving in that capacity and as a member of the Independent Senators Group,” said Senator Keating.
Senator Keating has had a distinguished career in the New Brunswick provincial government as a senior public servant. She is a lawyer by trade, having served as Chief Legislative Counsel and Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General. She also recently served as New Brunswick’s First Nations representative and provincial chair of the working group on truth and reconciliation.
She has committed herself to advocating for language rights in New Brunswick and the equal treatment of women in the legal profession.
Senator Yuen Pau Woo, facilitator of the Independent Senators Group, said: “We warmly welcome Senator Keating to the ISG, and look forward to working with her. Her outstanding contributions to public life have advanced our country in numerous ways, and her expertise in constitutional law will be of great benefit to the Senate as a whole. We are lucky to have her join us as a member of the ISG.”
Alongside fellow new Senator Brent Cotter, Keating’s addition brings the ISG to 50 members, the largest group in the Upper Chamber.
