Murray Sinclair Appointed Advisor of the Independent Senators Group
OTTAWA, February 1st, 2021 – The Independent Senators Group (ISG) is pleased to announce the appointment of the Honourable Murray Sinclair as an Indigenous advisor to the largest parliamentary group in the Senate. The former senator, who sat as a member of the ISG during his tenure in the Upper House, will provide advice on indigenous issues and Senate reform broadly.
As the former Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee, Sinclair was a prominent voice in the Senate for indigenous rights and an active proponent of Senate reform and modernization. He is the former Chair of the Standing Committee on Ethics and Conflict of Interest for Senators and is widely respected across Senate groups and caucuses.
“Senator Sinclair has been an integral part of efforts to modernize the Upper House from the early days of the ISG. He was highly respected not only for his views on indigenous issues, but on all legislative matters that came to the Upper House. The ISG is very fortunate to have continued access to his wise counsel and we look forward to his ongoing association with the Senate of Canada.” – Senator Yuen Pau Woo
“As I embark on this next chapter of semi-retirement, I am pleased to be able to keep abreast of the work of my former colleagues as they continue to move forward with modernizing the Upper Chamber. I take on this Indigenous advisor role to the ISG with enthusiasm to see how the institution will continue to become less partisan and more inclusive.” – Honourable Murray Sinclair
The Honourable Murray Sinclair will serve as an advisor on a voluntary basis. He officially resigned from the Senate on January 31st, 2021 to work on mentoring young lawyers in Indigenous law.
